The technology applied to the dance

The department of Movement Arts formed a research team in Technology Applied to Dance (InTAD) whose objective is to investigate the ways in which choreographic creations incorporate new digital interactive technologies. The members of the research team support the implementation of new technologies modifies the dynamics of the show, as well as the conception of the human body in art.

Currently, the InTAD carries out the research project called “Digital interactive technology applied to dance, applications and theoretical consequences” (La tecnología digital interactiva aplicada a la danza, aplicaciones y consecuencias teóricas), which motivated the creation of a Group of Experimentation in Technology Applied to Dance (Grupo de Experimentación en Tecnología Aplicada a la Danza (GETAD)), whose activity consists in the use of interactive devices with the aim of observing how they can be applied in scenic designs based in movement. 

The incorporation of new interactive technologies can affect the show’s dynamics, as they involve the public at the moment of the artistic creation by means of a system which answers in a dynamic way to the different actions of the audience, spectators, at the same time as it modifies the development of events which compose the show. For example, in musical plays, many times, the appearance of new sounds depends on the spectators’ movement in a certain zone. 

In the play, the hybrid body is translated into the use of the projection in real time of an actor’s body image which is in a scenic space distant from where the real dancer is. The use of this technologic resource is not exempted from possible errors; at the same time, it states new challenges, as there are new movements which are not programmed in the body, but which are generated through the interaction with the system, as new movements which define a possible movement dynamics between many are discovered.
